This Valentine's Day, Let's All Get Together and Make Love

By Craig Bierko, New York based actor,

Posted: January 16, 2010 01:57 PM  on the HuffingtonPost.com

Like most Americans I have been horrified by the devastation in Haiti - and deeply moved by the waves of humanitarian compassion, a significant portion inspired by celebrities like my friend Alyssa Milano who challenged corporations to match her generous donation of $50,000.

These are difficult times for many people financially and yet many are finding a way to participate by texting ten dollar donations through the Red Cross, Yele and other charities offering immediate, desperately needed aid.

Sadly, according to reports from Haiti, the state of emergency is long from over - and, in the words of a newly arrived humanitarian volunteer, recovery will not be a sprint but a marathon.

Last night I made a donation while watching CNN. A young girl had been trapped between two massive sheets of collapsed cement. She was terrified and the rescue workers kept her spirits high as they labored to free her, which they eventually did. Overcrowded conditions and the general mayhem of disaster complicated her delivery to a hospital and, by the time rescuers finally got her to a doctor the young girl had died.

My heart ached for this child - and it broke for her injured mother who was too weak to be told the news just yet.  I thought of my mother, my nieces, my beautiful girlfriend Meg and our dog Boo. I felt my heart swell to the point of bursting because all of the beautiful ladies in my life were healthy and out of harm's way tonight.

And that's when the ache in my heart became an idea.

Valentine's Day is approaching - a day reserved for couples to celebrate their love for one another by giving flowers, candy, sharing a romantic dinner, exchanging gifts or spending a night in some cozy out of the way hotel.   I am suggesting we dedicate Valentine's Day to those men and women who lost the love of their lives this week - or, right this moment, await news regarding a husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend or child.

I'm not talking about romance - I'm talking about love.

And I'm talking about money. The money you'd spend on the flowers, the candy, the dinner, the cozy out of the way hotel. That money.

Ladies, take your boyfriend or husband by the hand and tell him that instead of roses, candy and dinner, you prefer to celebrate the miracle of love this year by giving - together, as a couple.

Let's unite our hearts - right now, today - and offer a piece of the love in our own lives to those who need it desperately.   Gay, straight, Republican, Democrat, high school sweethearts, elderly and middle-aged couples alike - let's celebrate this Valentine's Day early by making love now.

Ladies, you know that this will be a lot easier if it comes from you, not us. Let your man know you'd like to donate the money you'd spend on indulging romance - and offer it together as a gesture of gratefulness for your good fortune - and in the name of those who suffer alone in misery.

I always knew Craig was a Marshmallow!

The Press-Enterprise

Several well-known celebrities have signed on to a fund-raiser for Loma Linda University Children's Hospital.

Carrie Fisher, Ryan Reynolds from "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and others were recruited by actor Craig Bierko ("Unhitched" on TV, the movie "Cinderella Man") for a one-time performance of a New York theater hit in Los Angeles.

"Celebrity Autobiography: In Their Own Words" features performers reading excerpts from books by other performers.

In its New York home on the Upper West Side, the cast often includes current and former "Saturday Night Live" comics such as Rachel Dratch.

The show has been profiled on CNN, "The View" and National Public Radio.

Senior market specialist Kelly Jackson said it was unusual for the hospital to have a benefit that far outside the Inland area.

Bierko is starring on Broadway as Sky Masterson in "Guys and Dolls" and will fly to LA on his day off for the show.

He said in a phone interview that he first visited the hospital a little over a year ago, when he was working in Southern California, through the request of a cousin who lives in the Palm Springs area.

When he arrived, he met with Joanna de Leon, director of the Loma Linda University Children's Hospital Foundation.

She asked him how long it had been since he visited a children's hospital.

"I said, basically since my birth -- it's been awhile. I didn't remember a lot of it. I wasn't blithe about it, but I thought, 'It will be like a children's hospital, probably a little sad. And there will be sick kids.' And soon as I walked in, the waterworks started."

He said when he visited tiny premature babies surrounded by doctors and nurses and gigantic humming machines, he almost couldn't comprehend what he was seeing.

"For the next two hours, I felt like my heart was exploding."

In a separate interview, De Leon described Bierko as being really quiet on that day and sniffling. She thought he might be under the weather. At lunch, he told her he was overcome with emotions.

"I think subconsciously I had been looking for this place," he said. "And this place found me."

De Leon said Bierko has given the hospital tickets to "Guys and Dolls" that were included in a travel package and auctioned at an earlier fundraiser, bringing in $10,000.

She said Loma Linda doesn't have as high a profile in Southern California as some out-of-state children's hospitals.

"We have incredible resources here, an incredible legacy of care. And it's very hard to bring that awareness and attention to the Inland Empire sometimes. It's a struggle that we constantly have. So we really appreciate Craig doing that for us."

Other stars who have been announced include Matthew Perry of "Friends," Fred Willard of "Best in Show," and "Celebrity Autobiography" creator Eugene Pack.

Bierko said casting will continue until the performance date.

Bierko has done it a few times in New York and said Pack usually assigns him to read Burt Reynolds opposite an actress representing Loni Anderson using a text culled from their respective books.

He cautioned the humor in "Celebrity Autobiography" can get "R-rated."

Coincidentally, Performance Riverside's Inland production of "Guys and Dolls" opens Friday.

NEWSWEEK: BATHING JOHN MALKOVICH

Oh, no. Regret is for suckers. I was 30 years old when that happened. Matthew Perry is a good friend of mine, and when I auditioned for that part I did a Matthew Perry imitation. And I got the part. At the time I got offered two shows. One was "Friends" and the other was called "Best Friends." And I actually preferred the other show. Things happen for a reason. And Matthew has me over to clean his pool, so it's all worked out.

Craig Bierko (inset), who's got an even wackier show in the works. Called "Bathing With Bierko," the off-the-wall Web show on Ted Turner's Super Deluxe broadband channel features Bierko, er, sponge-bathing guests. No kidding. His first guest is John Malkovich, the A-list actor who calls Cambridge home. "He's an adventurous, terrifically funny, amazingly down-to-earth guy," Bierko told online busybodies Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith. "I went to ask [Malkovich] to be on the show, and he said, 'Yeah, I'll do it.' And, I said, 'Let me explain one more time. . . .' And, he said, 'Yeah. Yeah! I'll do it.' I had to keep myself from asking him why." Will Bierko be bathing female guests, too? "Maybe a female guest would have to get behind me and bathe me."        Read Complete Article

Whatever gave him the idea to do a show while bathing guests?

Oh, I'm insane. I'd always thought that I'd like to do a talk show.    I remember running home to watch the Mike Douglas show and Merv.    I love that stuff. It's such a weird, American, patently false feeling between host and guests.    I started thinking about that sharing of false intimacy with genuine intimacy, asking, 'What's a talk show that hasn't been done?"      Read Complete Article

Rumor from The Yahoo Broadway Blog:

Happy George/Abe/Presidents/Shopping Day

February 19, 2008 5:41:07 AM

It's Not Easy Being Green...

But it is easy spreading rumor and gossip.  There is talk this week that Craig Bierko might take the title role in Shrek: The Musical which is coming to The Broadway next fall.  Craig is a movie and tv star who has done his time on 42nd Street.  He was seen in Susan Stroman's The Music Man several years ago.  I met him on opening night of that show and he was very nice.  Seems like a good choice, but there is no "official word" as of yet.

And yet another Rumor from Michael Musto

Shrek Casting Gossip: Merrily We Troll Along

Posted by Michael Musto at 1:05 PM, February 15, 2008

Craig Bierko might very well play Shrek in the upcoming musical show based on the hit movie franchise, according to a poster on one of them there often-right Broadway boards. (If it's true, Bierko will be joining Sutton Foster, who's playing Fiona in the singing and dancing troll-athon.) "But isn't Shrek the straight man?" asked another poster, quizzically. Well, I know this is not what they meant, but Janeane Garofalo once told me she'd dated Bierko and "We both read gay, but we're both straight!"

Unhitched, which premieres on Sunday, March 2nd at 9:30 pm, has a few things going for it that make it watchable, including Executive Producers Peter and Bobby Farrelly -- collectively known and The Farrelly Brothers. ...The third thing going for the show is its star Craig Bierko, who plays Jack "Gator" Gately. Now, when Craig was on Boston Legal last season I wasn't his biggest fan. Frankly, I thought he had too much swagger, too much piss and vinegar, for his own good. On Unhitched, Bierko is more down-to-earth and at home with his character.
